The WPI Data Access Boxes provide SAE J1708 compatible interconnection points for all J1708 compatible devices such as:

- Mobile Data Terminal
- Annunciator
- Many others too numerous to mention.
The SAE J1708 specification describes a VAN (Vehicle Area Network) which is a non-proprietary SAE communications protocol based on information sharing to cover transit’s vehicle device and communications needs. J1708 a hardware handshake for all manufacturer’s logic boards which allows resulting devices to interchangeably communicate with the rest of the vehicle’s devices just by specifying SAE J-1708 standards in the procurement document.
This powerful open architecture provides a cost-effective method for integration within a VAN of all of the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) functions desired in a transit vehicle.
The WPI Data Access Box along with the backbone and device cable assemblies provides to the system integrator a cost effective, reliable method of interconnection of all of the Smart Vehicle VAN components.
The Data Access Boxes are available in two versions, first the "Through Version" where by backbone cables are attached at either end allowing information to flow to and from the peripheral equipment and to the rest of the network. The "End Version" as its name would apply only has one access port and is generally used at the end of the daisy chain in the network.
DAB Boxes (Data Access Boxes) connected using WPI backbone cables are located throughout the vehicle, providing I/O connections for various peripheral equipment.
