WPI INTERCONNECT PRODUCTS AND SKYLER tECHNOLOGIES GROUP ANNOUNCE JOINT VENTURE IN RSL TECHNOLOGY |
WPI
Interconnect (WPI) and Skyler Technologies Group today announced the formation
of a joint venture into the remote source lighting (RSL) market, which uses
fiber optics in place of traditional lighting in indoor and outdoor
applications. The joint venture will be called RSL Fiber Systems LLC.
WPI, a leader in the interconnect
market, has been providing quality interconnect products and services in diverse
applications for the past 30 years.
Skyler Technologies Group, based in Connecticut, is a holding company that provides technical, managerial and marketing oversight to the fiber optics industry.
RSL Fiber Systems purchased the assets of RSL technology, including the patented Plylight, from the Winchester Electronics Division of Northrop Grumman, located in Watertown, Conn. The joint venture will use the resources and expertise of both companies to provide RSL technology to the military and commercial markets, including shipboard, avionics and transit. Production and manufacture of the RSL systems will be housed at WPIs Salem Division in Salem, NJ.
The RSL technology uses fiber optics to separate the light emission point from the power and light source by up to several hundred feet. Multiple locations can also be illuminated from a single source, offering many advantages over traditional lighting, particularly in rugged and harsh environments.
Some of the benefits include the
following:
Improved
efficiency and reduction in maintenance time and cost.
The optical fibers used as light conductors and the light emitters generate no electrical signal or heat, becoming virtually undetectable. These stealth capabilities are especially important in military applications due to the security requirements.
RSL allows for the use of active filters to greatly reduce the amount of infrared and ultraviolet energy introduced into a space.
Enhanced safety in wet or explosive environments.
Ability to precisely shape and target the light output.
We are pleased to combine our talents with Skyler Technologies to enhance our presence in this young, but growing market, said Henry Barbera, WPIs CEO. We expect this joint venture to further the integration of RSL technology into rugged and harsh environments where safety, security and cost efficiencies are concerned.
This
joint venture is a good fit for Skyler with the expertise and resources of WPI,
said Giovanni Tomasi, President of Skyler Technologies Group. It provides an
opportunity for us to bring a burgeoning technology into the forefront of the
commercial and military markets.
